Scars of Valor Foundation

Scars of Valor Foundation ("Scars of Valor," "we," "us") is an Illinois-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Veterans and First Responders. You trusted us with your information, and we take that seriously. This page explains in plain language what we collect, why, and how you stay in control of it.
What we collect
Free membership signup (Veterans and First Responders)
When you join for free, we ask for:
- Your name and email
- Your phone number (optional, only if you'd like a call from us)
- Your service status (for example, Veteran or First Responder)
- Your branch or agency
- Your years of service (optional)
- Your city and state
- How you heard about us (optional)
- Anything else you'd like us to know (optional)
- Whether you'd like email updates from us (optional, and unchecked unless you check it)
Paid memberships and donations
Our Community Supporter, Guardian, and Legacy memberships and all donations are processed by Stripe, a secure payment company. Stripe handles your card details. We never see or store your card number.
Our digital book
When you buy our digital book through Stripe, we use your name and email to deliver it to you.
What we never collect
We will never ask for your Social Security number, your DD-214 or any other discharge document, your date of birth, or your medical information. If a form ever asks you for these, it isn't from us.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Run your membership
- Send you the updates you opted into
- Process payments and donations
- Answer your questions and messages
That's it.
We don't sell your information
We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone. Ever.
Where your information is kept
- Our website is hosted on Squarespace, which processes the information you submit through our forms.
- Form submissions go to the Foundation's email inbox and may be stored in a Google Sheet on the Foundation's Google account.
- Payments are handled by Stripe.
These companies help us run the website and process payments. Each has its own privacy policy that covers how it handles data.
Cookies
Like most websites, our site uses standard cookies set by Squarespace. These help the site work properly and give us general information about how visitors use it. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some parts of the site may not work as well without them.
Coming soon: the Member Registry
We're building a Member Registry with member profiles, a directory, and messaging. It will come with its own controls so you decide what's visible on your profile. Your email address and phone number will never be shown to other members. We'll update this page with more details when it launches.
Your choices
You're in charge of your information. You can:
- See it. Ask us what information we have about you.
- Correct it. Tell us if something is wrong or out of date.
- Delete it. Ask us to remove your information.
- Unsubscribe. Stop receiving our emails at any time.

Children
Our website and memberships are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has given us information, please contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll post the updated version on this page and update the effective date at the top.
